As you view these images, I would like to note that many of the plates are based on ancient designs and techniques. In all cases I have taken these ancient ideas and converted them to modern conventions. For example, the majolica from history was a lead based glaze over a red ware and fired at a low temperature. I used my high firing porcelain and, still using a tin- glaze, but without the lead, developed colorings that worked at the higher temperatures; however the “basic” process is the same.I still paint the design on top of the flaky tin-bases glaze. The Sumi-e was for painting on paper, but I have developed a method and “paints” for painting on the porcelain. The celadon was the easiest – I only had to take the lead out of the glaze. If you would like to know more about the history of these ancient techniques, I have included brief histories for you below.
